Summary

A hoard of mid-fourth-century nummi, contained in a ceramic vessel. The finders did not seek any archaeological intervention, and they removed the coins from the pot after discovering them. Consequently, any internal stratigraphy has been lost. The coins range from AD 310 to AD 348. The largest proportion of the hoard (68%) consists of the common issues struck between AD 330 and AD 335 (the Gloria Exercitus type in the name of Constantine and his sons and the Urbs Roma and Constantinopolis commemorative issues). Earlier issues from before AD 324 are rare (<1%), and stray earlier radiates are absent, unlike some large hoards. Coins from the next two phases of coinage (AD 335-340 and 341-8) each make up just over 15% of the hoard. The latest coins in the hoard are from the joint reign of Constantius II and his younger brother Constans and are nummi of the ‘two Victories’ type bearing the reverse legend VICTORIAE DD AVGG Q NN (traditionally dated by RIC to AD 347-348, though a longer issue period in the AD 340s is now favoured). A variety of mints are represented, but, as is typical of this period, the western mint of Trier dominates the hoard (57%), followed by Lyon (15%) and Arles (9%). Eastern mints make up less than 3%.
