Summary

A farmer and his son were engaged in deep ploughing one of the fields at Bullock Down Farm at Beachy Head near Eastbourne in Sussex, when they noticed a scatter of perhaps a hundred copper coins. These they carefully gathered up and they recovered over the next few days a grand total of 5,146 coins, all of them debased antoniniani and with the remarkably narrow outside date-bracket AD 254-75. Later Mr. N.E.S. Norris of the museum at Lewes brought to light a further 150 coins, all of them comparable in every way with the coins already recovered. Also unearthed on the first occasion was a large number of sherds from which it has been possible to piece together the container. 5,290 antoniniani (radiates): Valerian I - Tetricus I. Found few yards from the hoard EASTBOURNE 1973 (CHRE 2099)
