Summary

Whilst some workmen were recently engaged in laying a gas main in Nottingham City, they came upon an earthenware vessel, or rather vessels, which contained some Roman silver and bronze coins. The hoard was found at the junction of Leslie Road and Berridge Road, Nottingham. The depth of the excavation was a little under 3 feet, and the soil was sand with a loam covering. The hoard consisted of 19 denarii and 46 bronze coins. The 19 denarii ranging from Vespasian to Marcus AUrelius (Caesar) were kept in a small earthenware pot. This vessel, together with the 46 bronze coins was placed inside a larger earthenware vessel made of a similar but not identical clay. Both pots were destroyed at the time of discovery. 65 coins: 19 denarii, 36 sestertii, 4 dupondii, and 6 asses: Galba - Antoninus Pius. g both pots. According to Green, the land where the coins was in the old days undoubtedly woodland, and until fifteen or twenty years ago it was a cornfield. It is situated at some distance from any known Roman road, and no trace had hitherto been found in Nottingham of a Roman station.

Ceramic vessel

It was made of hard grey ware, featuring a darker surface that was burnished and latticed with a diamond pattern, and it had an everted rim. It is 3 3/8 in. high and 3 3/8 in. wide.

Ceramic vessel

This vessel contained 46 bronze coins, and the other vessel with silver coins. The larger pot was a rouletted jar of hard grey clay, burnt red at the core, with a pedestal foot, 2¾ in. in diameter, and a small slit in the bottom. The surviving portion was 5½ in. high and 5 inches in diameter, internal measurement.
