Agate cameo
Depicting Herakles fighting a lion
Orange-brown agate with dark inclusions. High oval, fragmented ring stone, flat on both sides, rim beveled towards the front, straight edge.
The cameo shows an intaglio depiction of Herakles fighting the Nemean lion above a base line. The naked hero stands in a lunge position to the right and strangles the lion, which is turned to the left. The beast has pounced on Heracles, with the right hind leg on the ground, the left hind and front paw braced against the opponent's right thigh, and the long tail reaching down to the hero's left foot. Both Heracles and the lion appear in profile. A characteristic attribute of the hero can be seen in the left picture field with a vertical club.
The head of Herakles is missing at the top.
