543 denarii (of which 5 plated) found with a pitcher: Nero - Macrinus (AD 218); 1768 g. The mints of Alexandria, Antioch and Emesa are represented by one copy each, while the one from Laodicea by a total of 12 coins.

Comment

The hoard was found inside of a red ceramic vessel, pitcher (urceus). The vessel has no lid and the neck was deliberately broken to place the coins inside. The 543 coins filled up the vessel only half of its capacity.

On the plateau ”Dealul Cetății” (The Chester Hill), within a fruit tree garden in order to build a house. The house was found in a building with floor.
Associated features

The vessel was identified in the northern profile of the 0.40 m wide ditch, right underneath the vegetation layer, at circa – 0.35 m depth.

Pitcher (Urceus)

The pitcher (urceus) had been manufactured out of a semi-fine, yellow-beige paste and traces of engobe can still be seen on the outer surface. The pitcher had a hemispherical body, and a handle attached to the shoulder and neck. It is most likely one of the products manufactured in the pottery workshops identified on „Dealul Zânelor”. On the inner walls of the pitcher, strong traces of corrosion can be observed, indicating the volume of coins that were deposited inside.
