"The Tyrian shekel (no. 3668) and half shekel (no. 3670) were deliberately defaced. They were no longer regarded as Tyrian shekels or even as coins in general, but apparently used as ingots (as they are of pure silver)" (Meshorer 1989, 76).

Site comment

"Scattered hoard. Found in Casemate 1039 (basket 120) in the northern wall, near the synagogue. The coins were found scattered on the floor together with various objects, such as pieces of scrolls and torn pieces of leather, straw mats and cloth. We believe that these coins were not looted by the Romans because they were buried under the rubble of the collapsed ceiling; the fact that they were scattered rather than found together may indicate that they were originally hidden in the wall" (Meshorer 1989, 74).
