"The first group of coins, ranging from Nero through Hadrian, has to be considered as a separate lot, inherited from older times. The reason for this is the big gap of some 80 years between this first group and the fairly continuous sequence of coins of the Roman rulers and their relatives, beginning with Caracalla and ending with Claudius II" (Spijkerman 1958-1958-1959, 294).

"The jar containing the coins was hidden under a mill-stone and in the neighbourhood of this mill-stone were found the foundations of a row of Jewish buildings, put in a line parallel with the western wall of the synagogue. A street four meters wide separated those buildings from the synagogue" (Spijkerman 1958-1959, 294).
