Comment

The hoard was found by heavy machinery during the laying of a new water pipe and was not excavated by archaeologists. Although almost 80% of Vinkovci is an archaeological protected area and development control excavations are mandatory, the landowners ignored their obligations and carried out the excavation illegally. Unfortunately, this means that there is no detailed context for the find and many of the coins were recovered from a spoil heap at the site or in a dump of earth which was taken to the village of Marinci. It is possible that the coins recorded do not represent the entire hoard as it was found by chance and only reported later by a workman from the site. It is not known whether there were any objects in the hoard.

Site comment

The hoard was not excavated by archaeologists and therefore there is no detailed site context for this hoard. However, the hoard location was visited by archaeologists who were able to determine the general position of the hoard, but no sign of a pit or other feature was visible. Some of the coins were recovered from spoil on the site or in a dump taken to the village of Marinci.
