Summary

The hoard comprised originally ca. 2,400 coins (2,384 coins were mentioned in 1960), of which a small proportion has been lost. The coins were found in a copper-alloy vessel. 2 denarii and 2,302 radiates (incl. 7 imitations) ranging from Valerian and Gallienus to Diocletian have now been published. Tpq is AD 293.

The find spot lies half way between the vicus of Thun (Dunum) and the sanctuary of Thun-Allmendingen.

Comment

Hortinggut. Münzschatzfund vom 4. März 1955. Die Angaben in den bisher erschienenen Vorberichten (Literatur s. JbSGU 46, 1957, 137) über die Zahl der gefundenen Münzen sind divergierend. Der Konservator des Historischen Museums Schloß Thun, Hermann Buchs, meldet uns, daß der Münztopf auf keinen Fall 2700 Münzen enthalten habe, sondern wohl deren 2400. Davon konnten bis heute 2384 sichergestellt werden; ein kleiner Rest ging bei den Erdarbeiten verloren oder verschwand in den Taschen der anwesenden Arbeiter.
