Summary
A quantity of Roman coins ploughed up in a field called 'Fish Ponds', in the parish of Rayleigh, about three-quarters of a mile north of the town of Rayleigh. Apparently, the hoard consisted of more than 230 coins found in an earthen vessel, but was split in more parts. 117 coins, denarii and antoniniani (radiates) were documented: Antoninus Pius - Trajan Decius.
52 to Miss Sarah Ann Audley, 20 to Jonathan Wood, 20 to Mr. Lamprell, and 26 are in the possession of W. Pissey, Chemist, of Rayleigh. Roach Smith has examined those of Synnock and Pissey.
Pissey has Marc Antony, Hadrian, Crispina, Severus, Julia wife of Severus, Caracalla, Plautilla wife of Caracalla, Geta, Severus Alexander, Julia Mamaea, Maximinus, Gordian the Third, Philip, Otacilia, Severus, Saloninus Valerianus, Postumus.
In Prittlewell Priory Museum, Southend, a group of coins which was formerly in the collection of Mr. Pissey, and which was presented to the Museum in 1924 by his grandson, Mr. F.W. Wiseman, are believed to have been found in or near Rayleigh.
