Summary

In 1919, during the excavation of the Iron Age hill fort on Traprain Law, a pit was found in the latest floor. That pit was so close to the surface that the deposit obviously belonged to a later date. The hoard contained 160+ pieces of silver hack, much folded and crushed, as well as 4 siliquae. Two of them were clipped, the other two are too badly corroded to be sure.

Further exploration showed that the pit was some 18 inches to 2 feet in depth. The top of the hoard which it contained was but an inch or two beneath the second floor level above mentioned, and was so near to what must have been the surface at the time the floor was in use, that the deposit obviously belonged to a later date. The pit had been sunk until certain large stones which belonged to an earlier period of occupancy were encountered and prevented farther progress, and on these stones the lowest objects of the treasure were resting.
