Originally a 7th century BC Phoenician foundation, during the reign of Augustus, Leptis Magna was classified as a Civitas libera et immunis. The settlement was elevated to municipium in AD 64/65 and to colonia under Trajan (AD 98 –117) during the rule of Nero. it was greatly expanded under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (AD 193–211), who was a native of the city. Diocletian re-instated the city as provincial capital, and the city grew in prosperity until it fell to the Vandals in AD 439. It was re-incorporated into the Eastern Empire in AD 533, but continued to be plagued by Berber raids and never recovered its former importance. It fell to the Muslim invasion in c. AD 647 and it was abandoned. (Wikipedia)
