Summary

The Wiggensbach hoard was discovered in 1889 in Waldegg. The hoard consists of jewellery, the quantity and typology of which is not described by FMRD, and silver coins, mostly denarii and at least 4 antoniniani, with coins ranging from Mark Antony to Severus Alexander. 384 of them were bought by the Heimatmuseum in Kempten. 25 remained in a private collection. A list of them exists, but it gives only the name of the emperor. FMRD speaks of 407 denarii, but lists only 401 coins among which a few antoniniani.

Comment

In the description of the hoard FMRD speaks of 407 denarii (384 in the museum, 25 in private hands = 409), but then lists only 401. In addition a bronze coin of Domitian was included in Ullrich's list of this hoard, but this can longer be identified and does not easily fit into a hoard of otherwise exclusively silver coins. The composition of the hoard furthers indicates that it was buried as a result of the Alamannic invasion of Raetia in 233.
