Summary

The site lies 3.5 km northwest of the Edlington Wood hoard find [CHRE 499], in an area characterised by similar human settlement developments. Some coins were found on the surface beside a large flat limestone slab in the strip of undisturbed woodland on the northeastern side of the former Dearne Railway cutting. A rodent burrow had brought the coins to the surface, and with the use of a metal detector, the coins were traced back beneath the stone. By tunnelling under the slab, the main coin hoard and a pottery vessel were found. The site was located between the edge of the disused railway cutting and a recently bulldozed track that leads down towards the River Don, 70 meters from the roadway connecting Cadeby to the nearby Steetley Quarry, and situated 200 feet above the River Don. The upper surface of the slab was weathered and overgrown with moss. The stone was 37 cm thick by 1.25 m across; it appeared to rest on the ground surface but was actually resting on its southern side on a rock outcrop. The hoard in its pottery container lay under the centre of the slab, at an angle between it and the outcrop. The base and part of the body of the vessel remained in situ; its side had touched the face of the outcrop and the underside of the slab, except where a deep weathering hollow crossed the slab. The container was at arm's length under the slab, laid on its side. The surrounding soil was a reddish-brown clay with the occasional small fragment of weathered limestone. Twenty coins were recovered from the soil under the pot down to a depth of 7 cm. The area around the slab was searched with a metal detector, and two coins were found at the northeastern corner, but pieces of wire and scrap metal limited the search. Treasure hunters destroyed the find site in the days that followed, using an earth-moving machine to remove the covering slab. After the disturbed earth had weathered, two coins were found on the site. A month later, a final 22 coins were recovered from the disturbed site. The hoard consists of coins from Valerian I to Aurelian.

Ceramic vessel

The object in question was a wheel-made coarse ware jar, constructed from light grey fabric with buff tones and filled with fine sand grit. It was 17.2 cm high, 10 cm in diameter (rim), and 6 cm in diameter (base). The vessel was reconstructed from fragments. A piece missing from the rim is an old break, but some small pieces missing from the body have freshly broken edges.
