Fetching coin data
Sherds were identifiable as Severn Valley Ware, the dominant pottery industry in this region between the mid-first and fourth centuries AD. The base of the vessel was grooved and therefore likely to have held an early position within this date range, although in lieu of a rim, it is difficult to narrow the date further. The pot seems to have broken in the soil prior to the hoard’s discovery, probably due to plough damage sustained when the field was in arable use before AD 1838 (TNA IR 29/39/81), which might also explain the lack of a rim or neck. The pot's interior surface showed staining where the coins touched.
