Summary

A hoard of 4,805 antoniniani (radiates) date from the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus (AD 253-260) to the final year of the reign of Probus (AD 276-282). The earliest coins have a higher silver content, but the bulk of the hoard is made up of the debased copper alloy coins issued in large quantities under the Gallic Empire (AD 260–274). The hoard has a small number of later coins with higher silver content that post-date the coinage reform under Aurelian. The coins were contained in a broken jar, although the fragments were held together with bandages to allow removal of the coins. The bulk of the hoard was in situ in a broken container, but the top had been disturbed, and some coins were scattered in the surrounding soil. A plastic bag of loose coins was placed in the pot below some soil, along with further coins, and a small number had been coated in olive oil by the finder, which was later removed in the laboratory. Coins were removed from the pot in 8 layers, each subdivided in two halves by the conservator, Saray Naidorf. The contents of each layer were sorted by the emperor, but no difference was found between the layers to suggest that they had been sorted or deposited at different dates. A small amount of plant material (chaff) and the remains of one insect were found associated with the coins, preserved by proximity to copper.

Ceramic vessel

A vessel of 'dog bowl' form, possibly used as a lid, and a bag of associated sherds. Due to adhering soil, it was not possible to comment on the fabric of these vessels, so examination by a local pottery specialist is recommended. The jar appears to be a greyware vessel with a beaded rim. The body has a wide band of diamond-shaped lattice decoration. The dog bowl is of coarser fabric, with a black exterior and white interior. It has a flat rim and a flat base.
