Summary

522 denarii: Augustus - Nero (AD 54). The hoard was contained in an earthen pot or Iota, a variety of local vessel which has been made in the same general form since the Megalithic period. There were 522 denarii in all, and of these 210 were sent to the British Museum for inspection; there is apparently no documentation concerning this in the British Museum now. There is some confusion about the composition of the hoard, but the account below is from Elliot's report, as he did actually see the coins. Mr. Walhouse took some casts of the coins, and remarks that some of the coins were sent to Madras, presumably meaning the Museum there, by order of the Government, but neither his casts nor the relevant Government order can now be traced.
