Site comment

The hoard was found in a dump in an abandoned lot in a fifth- to early sixth-century residential quarter near the ancient synagogue. In the fifth century, the area consisted of houses of the wealthy elite of Sardis, as can be seen in their wall paintings, marble veneers, courts, and private hydraulic features. The area was the focus of renewed building activity in the early part of this century, as houses were rebuilt and colonnades adorned the streets; it was on the decline by the mid-sixth century, before being abandoned in the seventh century.
