Summary

The hoard was discovered with the aid of a metal detector on farmland at Akenham in Suffolk. The first coins were unearthed in June 1981, then, over a period of several months, further searches revealed more coins, amounting to a total of 45, plus one small fragment of a gold bar. In the autumn of 1982, a further search, following ploughing the field, revealed an additional 14 coins. Also discovered on the site was a piece of pottery which has been identified as the rim of a small bowl or pot of local manufacture dating from the second half of the second century or early third century AD The coins are all silver Roman denarii ranging in date from 32-31 B.C. to AD 220-222. The piece of gold, which appears to have been cut from a longer, narrow bar of gold, had a metallic composition quite similar to Roman gold coins and jewellery.
