Summary

2,118 antoniniani (radiates) to Carausius (check) and pottery. Found on 19th July 2006 by Context One Archaeological Services during excavations for Wessex Water. The hoard was found in the corner of a Roman-period roundhouse. It was partly contained within a pottery vessel and covered by a slate, with some additional groups of coins in neat stacks around the vessel. The groups in stacks were thought to have come from a purse or roll, which had held them together during deposition but subsequently disintegrated.

A local, oolitic-tempered coarse-ware vessel. The pot was found to be a standard domestic vessel; indeed, the base of the interior showed a burnt lipid residue that was probably the result of heating milk. The pot and its coins were covered by a flat, un-worked local Devon slate
