Summary

During the planting of fruit trees, a pot containing a late third-century hoard of 202 coins was discovered about 300 yards south of Ewelme House. The base of a pot of greyware, which had contained the coins, was recovered. Fragments of a pot of thinner clay were also found, perhaps a covering sherd. The coins were all ant. (except for 20 quinarii of Allectus): Ant. Quin. Gallienus (sole reign) 7 Postumus 8 Marius 1 Victorinus 36 Claudius II 11 Tetricus I 57 Tetricus II 32 Tacitus 1 Probus 3 Diocletian, struck by Carausius 1 Maximian 1 Maximian, struck by Carausius 1 Carausius 2 Allectus 7 20 uncertain and frag.s 14 182 20 –Pot frags. and 202 coins in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford Examined 198 coins, 1978 (ASR)
