Summary

A hoard of 34,000 coins (100 kg), comprising large numbers of antoniniani from the period of the 'Gallic Empire' (AD 260-274), found in two storage ceramic vessels. A few denarii were also recorded. Coins range from Hadrian to Probus (276-282).

Site comment

Examination of the stratigraphic section shown that the monetary deposit was made in two stages. First, a first pit was dug to the north to bury the ceramic uncovered by archaeologists (vessel 1). Three stones, between 15 and 25 cm, served as a wedging system at the base of the vase. Then, the first deposit was filled. A second pit, of smaller volume, was dug immediately southwest of the previous one. This was used to bury the ceramic found by the two workers (vessel 2). The chronological interval separating these two burial phases cannot be estimated.
