Summary

The alleged content of a purse comprises 36 mixed denominations (radiates and sestertii) from Trajan to Carinus. The purse was originally located over an abandoned hearth within a taberna in the eastern sector of the so called domus of Titus Macer. Coins originate from different layers; two late Roman bronze coins have to be regarded as instrusions while the connection of a very worn repubblican denarius with the purse is uncertain.

The coins originally part of the purse have been found into both the last combustion level of the hearth and different layers connected to ancient building or modern spoliation activities which affected it.

The domus of Titus Macer, named after an inscription found on a stone weight, is one of the largest Roman house in Aquileia located at the south-easten corner of the repubblican walls. During the 1st century AD it reached its largest extension covering the entire central part of an insula. Archaeological investigations have been undertaken on the site since the first half of the 20th century and very recently between 2009 and 2015 by the University of Padua, department of Cultural Heritage, which yielded many artefacts, notably over 1400 coins.

[...] The deposit (hearth) was made of layers of products of combustion alternating to layers of burnt clay. The two groups should theoretically be kept separated, being the outcome of different processes and having furthermore a different status. [..] The clayish layers provided a few artefacts, which turned out to be residuals, exactly as might be expected. [...] Focusing on the layers produced by combustion, the two lower ones (403 and 409) were made almost entirely of white ash, layer 386 had a matrix rich of greyish ash and charcoals, while the upper level (75 which yelded the main content of the purse) was almost black in colour and extremely rich in charcoal. [...] This is a major deficiency in this case study, as the total amount of dated finds is, thus far, only 15. Fortunately, among them, a high percentage of coins allows for some accuracy. Three specimens appear clearly residual: two of them (thin walled ware) are embedded in one of the clayish layers, while a third (black glazed pottery) is a residual within a primary context.
