Summary

Roman silver coins were found by labourers in making a cast for a hedge, called Silverlane from that discovery. They secreted all the coins and sold them. The vessels were of silver. They sold most of these likewise, after breaking the bottoms out of some, and the handles and ornaments off others: a sympalum; the bottoms of three others; the handles of three more; part of a handle; a figure of Antaeus and Hercules wrestling; a Neptune. The lane in which these antiquities were found is about a mile from the Roman causeway. The nine silver fragments are in the Department of Prehistoric and Romano-British Antiquities, British Museum. They are a plain patera, and the bottoms of three others; four patera-handles ornamented in high relief; and a medallion showing Hercules and Antaeus wrestling, and a Neptune. The silver is believed to be of the time of Severus Undated?, or Severan?
