Summary

While a labourer was ploughing at Baconsthorpe his plough struck the top of a large urn. Estimates vary from 9000 to 17000. Some coins are said to have been removed before the landowner took the hoard from his workers. "A cabinet of 500 coins arranged by Miss M. A. Hogg for Mr. "Mott"—selected specimens from the coin collection described in Hogg 1884. Hogg provides a list of the 25 emperors represented in the hoard. Spurrell published a summary of 3682 coins (1881, 434) and Robertson gives this alongside her list of 857 coins in Norwich Castle Museum and 500 in a private collection. The latter two are combined to form the summary of 1366 coins here, given the discrepancies between Robertson's and Spurrell's lists. Coins of Nerva and Macrinus are mentioned by Spurrell and not by Robertson. The cabinet is known to be in a private collection.

Ceramic vessel

The vessel was about fourteen inches in height, and its largest circumference was thirty-six inches. The interior shows horizontal marks on the lathe and is, like the exterior, ash-colored on the surface. The body of the ware is composed of a strong, coarse, and rather gritty red paste here and there streaked with black from insufficient firing.
