Summary

Mr. B.J. Kilshaw discovered, with the aid of a metal detector, a large quantity of coins and fragments of an earthenware jar in Quarry field, Coleby, near Lincoln. The finder proceeded to dispose of the hoard, the first portion in part-payment for dog food, but subsequently to a number of coin dealers, locally and further afield, notably in Sussex. A proportion of the coins was subsequently recovered by the police and at a Coroner's Inquest in Lincoln on 27 August 1975 the hoard was declared Treasure Trove on the basis of a cleaned sample of around 900 coins. The hoard was stored at the British Museum in an uncleaned state pending the establishment of ownership. The size of the hoard will never be known. Some estimates made in 1975 suggested that it may have contained as many as 15,000 or even 20,000 coins. However, the energy shown by the police in tracing and recovering the coins and the short time between discovery and coroner's inquest (4-5 months) suggest to us that the majority of the coins were recovered and that the number of coins involved is unlikely to have been much in excess of 10,000. The coins examined in the Department of Coins and Medals, the British Museum, were 6968 regular coins (1 denarii, 6967 antoniniani), 786 forgeries (67 cast, 719 struck), and 13 uncertain, making a total of 7767.
