Caupona di Salvius with an apartment on the upper floor The caupona-thermopolium has two entrances, one on the alley to the north and the other on the one to the west. It is called Salvius because of the electoral inscriptions on the wall to the south of the entrance, which exhort a certain Salvius to elect a certain Casellius as aedile. In the first room, characterised by the four wall panels painted with lively popular scenes on a white background, there was a large counter with two terracotta dolia containing hot beverages for sale. From it, one could access the patrons' room and the kitchen with the hearth, where a staircase was located. On the upper floor, between August 5 and 7, 1876, two human skeletons were discovered, and next to them a rich hoard consisting of 6 gold coins and 305 silver coins, eight gold rings of various types, a pair of bracelets, two pairs of earrings, and a gold necklace, along with some fragmented silver objects. The two individuals, perhaps the managers of the caupona, had found the mound in the apartment while trying to escape with their belongings.
