Four spacers
The two spacers in the Cleveland group and the matching pair in the private collection are nearly identical in size, shape, and decoration. All four pieces are fashioned as Corinthian columns with a beautifully molded acanthus leaf capital, hexagonal shaft, and circular molded base. Capital, shaft, and base were made separately. Both the base and the capital were formed by chasing, while the shafts were formed from sheet gold. The flat metal was first decorated in opus interrasile, then bent into hexagonal shape and closed by soldering. Each of the six panels features a different design: a stylized branch exactly like the one in the center of the suspension loop on the octagonal pendant, a row of S-shaped hooks, a stylized laurel branch, a running tendril scroll, a band of foliate interlace, and a running band of stylized palmettes. Molded strips of gold were soldered to the corners of the shaft as a reinforcement.
