The bowl measured 30.6 cm in diameter and had an overall depth of 9.5 cm. It was raised from one sheet of metal, the composition of which has been ascertained from the analysis of a small portion (about 1 cm). The Penard bowl appears to be a rather poor and crude copy of contemporary silverware design, as instanced, for example, by a bowl in the Caubiac treasure, buried probably in 270. The somewhat flat gadroons were worked up in a purely linear outline from the inside, where tool marks showed. The turned-up, flat rim suggests that the bowl originally had a cover. The bowl shows many signs of wear.
